The Australian government sought views on aspects of the energy transformation to achieve the 2030 emissions reduction target and net zero by 2050 while ensuring a reliable, secure and affordable energy supply.
The Clean Energy Council considers that the decarbonisation of the Australian electricity sector is feasible by 2035, and that the Australian Government should set itself the goal of achieving this, noting that a net zero emissions electricity sector will deliver lower electricity prices to consumers and prove a drawcard for energy-hungry industries over the decades and indeed, century, ahead.

The development of sectoral decarbonisation pathways to net zero emissions is an important process for identifying the range of policies and solutions that Australia will need to meet its legislated commitment of net zero by 2050, building on the important steps that have already been taken by the Albanese Government since coming to office in 2022.
