An emerging sector
The world currently consumes around 100 million tonnes of hydrogen per year – almost all of it fossil fuel based - largely for the production of ammonia for fertilisers, explosives and other industrial processes.
Decarbonising hydrogen production – by splitting water (H20) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2) with the use of renewable electricity – is a global imperative that Australia is in the box seat to use to its economic advantage. If Australia can produce competitively priced renewable hydrogen, we open the door to new and expanded manufacturing opportunities in Australia in green chemicals and molecule fuels such as ammonia, methanol and sustainable aviation fuel, green fertilisers (which currently use fossil-fuel based ammonia) and green metals (particularly green iron, alumina and aluminium). The Clean Energy Council’s Renewable Hydrogen and Decarbonisation Directorate is focused on positioning Australia to capture these transformative opportunities and realise the vision to become a renewable energy superpower.
EXPLAINER
Response to the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)
With the passing of the landmark Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in August 2022, Australia is at great risk of being left behind if it does not respond decisively, and soon. Our Power Playbook analyses the challenges and priorities for clean energy investment,
and provides recommendations for how we can accelerate Australia’s clean energy transformation and take
advantage of the immense opportunities before us.
The majority of our policy work is developed with Members in our directorates, with smaller working groups and committees tackling specific challenges.
Members can log in to read more and join this exciting Directorate leading the charge to decarbonise Australia's economy and accelerate the clean energy transition.
