The following statement is attributable to Clean Energy Council General Manager - Market Operations and Grid - Christiaan Zuur:

“The Clean Energy Council welcomes the NSW Government's announcement today to support the development of three new long-duration storage assets, including two big batteries and a pumped hydro scheme.

“These new storage assets will together provide an additional 13,790 megawatt hours of energy storage, to help keep the lights on for New South Wales energy customers.

When fully charged, these batteries and the pumped hydro station will produce enough power for half a million households for a day. This is a cleaner, cheaper and more reliable way to back up and firm renewable energy.
Christiaan Zuur Clean Energy Council General Manager - Market Operations and Grid

“The announcement could not come at a more opportune time in the evolution of the NSW power system.

“These long duration storage assets will be a huge help, as NSW weans itself off its ageing, expensive and unreliable fleet of coal generators. It will help reduce emissions, but more importantly, reduces the risk of blackouts and the massive energy price increases that have resulted from an over reliance on coal and gas.”
