As batteries, flexible demand and other price-responsive technologies play a bigger role in the energy system, the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) is looking at how it can better understand resources that can influence electricity demand, generation and market outcomes but aren’t fully visible through existing arrangements. Its proposed Market Visibility Framework spans everything from large industrial loads and data centres to household batteries, rooftop solar, EVs and virtual power plants.
In our submission to AEMO, we support better visibility where it can improve forecasting, system security or market outcomes. But getting the design right matters. New requirements should be proportionate, evidence-based and reflect the significant differences between a large industrial load and thousands of consumer-owned devices participating through a VPP.
Our submission also supports AEMO’s staged approach, including making better use of information it already has, starting with the largest and most material visibility risks, and testing new requirements before introducing broader obligations.
