Australians are backing renewable energy technologies in record numbers
Our Rooftop solar and storage report, January to June 2026 shows growing numbers of Australians are taking energy security into their own hands as global conflict drives up fuel prices and inflation.
A record-breaking 1.89 GW of rooftop solar and 276,000 home batteries were installed in the first half of 2026.
How solar and batteries are surging
As at 30 June 2026, there were:
3,406 Approved Batteries
up from 1,259 the previous quarter
Manufacturers and retailers are offering consumers greater choice and protection
The number of battery models on the Clean Energy Council’s Approved Products list increased from 1,259 to 3,406, the first vehicle-to-grid capable chargers were approved and the number of Approved Sellers on the New Energy Tech Consumer Code program grew 18% to 2,389.
The next step is to maximise the value for owners and all Australians
Solar and batteries aren’t just driving down power bills for their homes. For years, rooftop solar has helped push down demand from the grid in the middle of the day and now, home batteries are doing the same for evenings. This improves grid reliability and reduces the impact of evening price spikes.
The next step is to create even more value. Virtual power plants, flexible tariffs and emerging flexibility markets can reward households for supplying energy during peak demand, absorbing excess solar generation and easing local network constraints.
The Clean Energy Council is undertaking a flexibility value study to quantify these consumer and system benefits and identify the reforms needed to unlock more value.
