The Clean Energy Council has welcomed today’s release of the National Climate Risk Assessment and the accompanying National Adaptation Plan by the Minister for Climate Change and Energy, describing the reports as a clear reminder of the systemic risks Australia faces and the urgent need to accelerate the transition to clean energy.

The Climate Risk Assessment sets out the consequences of failing to act, including risks to living standards and vulnerable communities, while the Adaptation Plan highlights the urgent steps required to address the 10 priority hazards that will impact the way of life Australians all enjoy.

Clean energy will be central to Australia’s response at both the grid-scale and household level, with renewables playing a major role in helping communities adapt to the very real consequences of our changing climate. Our industry is building resilience into electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure, supporting regional economies to diversify in the face of droughts and heatwaves, and equipping households with rooftop solar and batteries to reduce their exposure to climate pressures.

The following is attributable to William Churchill - Chief Policy and Impact Officer at the Clean Energy Council:

  • “Today’s reports leave no room for doubt. The need to prepare and act is now beyond question.”
  • “The elderly, financially disadvantaged, and regional or remote communities are identified as being particularly at risk, which makes access to affordable clean energy solutions like rooftop solar and batteries even more critical.”
  • “The risks outlined today show why we need to speed up the roll out of clean energy projects and stay on track for net zero."
  • “Australian households are doing their part, with the country expected to have 37.2 GW of rooftop solar installed by 2030, 3.3 per cent above the 36 GW needed to reach the 82 per cent target for clean electricity generation.”
