Rooftop solar and batteries continue to power the clean energy transition, now to focus on the next wave of participants
Our bi-annual Rooftop solar and storage report, January to June 2025 shows that Australian consumers and small businesses continue to take advantage of Australia’s abundant solar resources with rooftop solar accounting for 12.8 per cent of all electricity generated in the first half of the year.
While 4.2 million Australian households and businesses have installed rooftop solar and increasing numbers are buying batteries, now is the time to unlock the next wave of solar savings by supporting the nearly 3 million Australian households who are renters.

Key insights from the report

Rooftop solar remains on track to deliver its contribution to the national target of 82 per cent of electricity coming from clean energy sources by 2030. The Australian Energy Market Operator’s 2024 Integrated System Plan expects that, by 2030, Australia will have approximately 36 GW of rooftop solar installed across the National Electricity Market. Based on current uptake, we expect Australia to have installed 37.2 GW of rooftop solar by June 2030, exceeding projections by 3.3 per cent.

Sales of battery units hit record-breaking highs, off the back of federal and state rebate schemes, with 85,000 sold in the half; a 191 per cent increase in sales for the same period last year.

Queensland has, for the first time, overtaken New South Wales installing more rooftop solar than its southern neighbour in the first half of the year.

"We continue to see more and more Queenslanders switch to solar."
It's time to support solar savings for renters
Over a third of Australian households now have rooftop solar installed and increasing numbers are buying batteries. Now is the time to unlock the next wave of solar savings by supporting the nearly 3 million Australian households who are renters.
- Rooftop solar can enable household savings of up to $1500 a year on energy bills; and when combined with a battery those savings can almost double.
- Around 2.9 million (26%) of Australia’s occupied homes are rented from landlords, 277,500 (3%) rented from state or territory housing departments and 223,600 (2.4%) rented under other arrangements, representing a significant market and the next wave of rooftop solar uptake.
- Victorian, NSW and Federal Governments have already put in place initiatives and schemes that enable renters to take greater control of and lower their energy bills with success; we encourage the extension and expansion of these schemes and encourage other states and territories to follow suit.
We are calling on state and territory governments across the country to establish and, where they exist, expand schemes that incentivise landlords and provide opportunities for the millions of rental households in Australia to benefit from lower energy bills from rooftop solar.

"Getting solar has saved us on energy bills. We’ve been able to pass on about a 20% reduction to our tenant.”
