Offshore ocean winds are strong and consistent. Turbines located at sea generate more power and boost electricity levels when the grid needs it most. The Winds of Opportunity report, which includes analysis by Deloitte and was commissioned by the Clean Energy Council, highlights the benefits of offshore wind to Australia’s energy mix and to the communities in which it will operate.

  • It will create thousands of jobs, including in areas where coal is dying out. There will be 4,000 jobs during construction – that’s jobs for electricians, crane operators, and seafarers – and 7,500 ongoing operations and maintenance jobs following construction.
  • There will also be around 3,500 indirect jobs created ‘downstream’ in areas like manufacturing.
  • It will inject $15.2 billion into the Australian economy and attract $100 billion of capital investment while creating ripple effects throughout local economies. The Star of the South project in Gippsland Victoria has already spent $4.8 million in that community, and that’s all before a licence to construct has been granted
  • Because 87 per cent of Australians live within 50km of the shore combined with the fact offshore wind areas are located close to retiring coal-fired power stations, offshore wind will help to electrify the grid with the least amount of new transmission infrastructure.
  • Offshore wind is tried and tested in 20 countries for over 30 years, including the US, UK, China, France, Germany and Japan, and it’s in development in a further 20 countries.
